La prestigiosa organización internacional de fotografía, WPPI en Español (por su siglas en ingles, Wedding & Portrait Photographers International en Español (Asociación Internacional de Fotógrafos de Bodas y Retratos en Español)), me acaba de enviar un email invitándome a someter una de mis fotos premiadas en la ultima competición de la Convención Anual 2010 celebrada en La Vegas, Estados Unidos, para publicarla como "La Foto de Mes" en su sección internacional orientada hacia la comunidad hispana.

Estoy que salto por las paredes, pues este es un reconocimiento inesperado y de las mas alta envergadura en la fotografía mundial.

Es una gran satisfacción para mi el haber sido comisionado para fotografiar la portada de la revista "Novios Málaga" para sus próximas ediciones.

La sesión fotográfica fue fantástica y la realizamos en algunos puntos emblemáticos de la ciudad, como La Alameda Principal, Plaza de la Marina, Parque de Málaga, la catedral y sus alrededores. El equipo con el que conté fue increíble y todos contribuyeron con entusiasmo y alegria. Fue simpático ver como en muchos casos, las personas que pasaban por allí se acercaban a observar, comentar y algunos, incluso a ser parte de la foto.

Todos nos lo pasamos increíble. En unos días agregaré algunas imágenes más, así que espero que las disfrutéis y sentiros libre de escribir vuestro comentario al pie de este "post".

Arturo Macias as judge at the Orlando Camera Club

Last Monday, February 8th the Orlando Camera Club kindly invited me to be one of their judges at this month photographic competition.

It was fun to be on the other side this time. Ha, ha, ha.

Images were amazing and hard to score.

Orlando Camera Club (www.orlandocameraclub.com) do a great job gathering great professional photographers and unique amateurs as well under one roof without distinctions and labeling.

All of them get together for the love for photography to share and learn one from each other.

I felt honored to be invited to judge great images and I did my best to be fare to the makers.

Some people feel that competition is not worth to try because it is very subjective, expensive (most of time), time consuming and almost unvalued by potential clients but I feel they are very wrong.

I had been involved in competition for a few years as you can find on my web site (check on the tag: "Achievements") as well as on this blog in some post and I can say that my personal experience is that you get a great return from the effort.

I had learned a lot and I got a sense of what is my label against other great photographers and, also, I gain the friendship and respect of others in the profession.

It is very easy to claim to be a "good professional" photographer today's day but my opinion is, if you say you are a "professional" you should proof who you are and what you are before talking so loudly.

Also, I know that some of my clients really gave value to my achievements in competition when the chosen me for their events but it is still a long way to go to open some other clients eyes about the value of hiring a professional back up by awards.

I can tell you one thing for sure, they are no easy to achieve.

In my last visit to Spain last January I got blessed with a beautiful snow day while I was in Granada visiting to my good friend and great photographer Fran Russo.

I love sharing knowledge and experiences with my friends all over the world because I feel that no matter how much you know and not matter who you think you are there is always a chance that in the process of sharing I always learn something that I will keep for the rest of my live but even if don't learn anything about photography I always will learn about friendship and that is the best of all.

I had make a few new great friends on this visit, among them Andres Parro (ArteImagen), Luis Masyebra (Luz de Boda), Jose Angel Sweney, Carlos Vaquero.

I also found friends from many years ago, Mar Castaño with who I enjoy a few great moments and her beautiful family, Paco, Marina and Juan.

I enjoyed a lot the time we spend together, their hospitality and their conversations.

I really had a great time.

2009 Central Florida Photographer of the Year

I cannot complain. 2009 had been the most awarded year in all my carrier and it ends in the best way I could dream about. (You could see all of them in my web site: www.artzphoto.com, and select the tab named "Achievements"). Now, it is the time to celebrate the last one, the 2009 Central Florida Photographer of the Year handled by PPSCF (Professional Photographers Society of Central Florida) president, Maurice Rodriguez as shown in the following image.

In top of that, I got an extra surprise. The Board of Directors honored me for mi accomplishments at PPSCF with an additional plaque in celebration for been the 2006, 2007, 2008 &, now, 2009 Central Florida Photographer of the Year and as 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Top Ten Central Florida Photographer of the Year.

Destination Wedding: Maracaibo, Venezuela

When I got commissioned to photograph Andrea & David's wedding in Maracaibo (Venezuela) several months ago, I knew it was going to be a great wedding but my expectations end been way short.

The couple and their families were absolutely wonderful and easy to work with.

Andrea was one of the most beautiful, funniest and gorgeous bride I had photographed.

David was a handsome, quite and cooperative groom and both together was a delightful team to photograph all day long.

Ceremony was set in a historic five centuries old spanish chapel with all the flavor and warm a place like these feels is impregnated with.

Reception was carefully set in a relative's home (Monica & Edwin), so elegantly organized that could shadows any of the most sophisticated places in town.

Today, just a couple of hours ago, the 2009 Third TriAnnual PPSCF (Professional Photographers Society of Central Florida) Print Education Competition had ended.

As always, I enjoyed the challenges of presenting a selection of prints in front of a judge's panel selected among some of the best photographers in the State of Florida.

This time one of the judges was a current president of FPP (Florida Professional Photographers), Al Gordon, which in conjunction with the other two set a high standard on this competition.

Four prints per photographer were allow on this edition.

Bellow this lines, you could take a look at the images I entered.

All of them received merit awards.

The first one was title "New Love at the Old House" (it feature two of my favorite clients, Charissa & Kenneth, at their engagement) was award 1st Place on the Social Function category.

The second one, title "Arabian Tower", was selected as Second Place, also, on the Social Function Category.

The tower showing here represent a section of the "Giralda de Sevilla" (Seville, Spain).

The image bellow was captured in "Laguna de Sinamaica" (Zulia State, Venezuela).

This print was awarded with the Third Place on the Illustrative Category.

The forth image and one of the craziest one, was also captured in the city of Seville from my last trip to Spain, and I envision this image while I was seating in a bar practicing one of Spain favorites sports, drinking beer.

I titled "342 Lungs".

As I saw this scenic I immediately intuited the potential of its story telling.

When I look on this image I don't see just cigarette butts but it is more like I kind of get the feeling of the stories behind each one of them.

Well, It may be my crazy imagination going too far but the judges seen to share it somehow and it got awarded with a merit award and I am very happy about it.

Fundacion Internacional Amigos de Niños con Cancer

Last Saturday, September 12, 2009 I had the opportunity to be part of an act of kindness and generosity at the meeting that the "Fundacion Internacional Amigos de Niños con Cancer" (International Foundation of Friend of Children with Cancer") celebrated at the MetroWest Country Club.

There, a group of generous people from local business and government offices gather together to contribute with their donations in a silent auction to help this Foundation to provide children from Latin America to come to Orlando and enjoy a few unforgettable days of their lives and set aside the harsh days that cancer treatment imposed in the live of those children and families.

Many people were present and make this event an great success.

We add our contribution to this great cause offering no only photographing this event but also donating to the silent offer a package with some of our photographic service, joying in this way to many other business and artists who also donated to this event.

Arturo Macias awarded "Florida State Top Ten Photographer of the Year"

On August 28 at the Florida Professional Photographers Convention Banquet, Arturo Macias was awarded among the "2009 Top Ten Photographers in Florida State".
Arturo Macias was also honored with the 1st Place at the Abstract Category and Best of Show in the Illustrative Category for his print titled "Reading between the lines".
Also, his other 3 entries were awarded with Print Merits in the categories of Social Events and Photojournalism.
Arturo Macias is also recipient of Florida Education Degree (FED) which honor those photographer who actively participate in workshops & seminars to keep themselves in the cutting edge in photography.

I feel it is a healthy exercise as a professional photographer to challenge myself in some of the most reputable and important competitions. The "Px3 Prix de la Photographie Paris, France" which in this edition gathers more than six thousands photographers all over the world and showcases about 20,000 images.

Now we are talking about a serious competition, out of the 20,000 + images only a handful are chosen. Add to that the label of its judges, which you will find at the end of this post and you figure what quality artist you will find at the "Px3 Prix de la Photographie Paris, France".

The "Prix de la Photographie, Paris, France" (PX3) strives to promote the appreciation of photography, to discover emerging talent, and introduce photographers from around the world

to the artistic community of Paris, France.

One of my entries (see it above), title: "Attack" was award Third Place in the Professional Category.

Another entry, title: "Leticia Smoke" was selected as Honorable Mention.

It is so nice and refreshing to work with couples that spark love, friendship and happiness.

This is a sample of that, Kristin & Victor. I just finished photographing them this afternoon, well, it is 2:46 am so I should said yesterday afternoon, at Winter Park' "Case Feliz" and Rolling Collage just before it starts raining.

It was a playful session were Kristin & Victor rapidly got engaged into the dynamics of the session with my crazy games and even crazier feed backs all focus to overcome the normal shine reaction to the camera and a grayly hair guy like me (he, he).

I have the feeling that it will be an even funnier and enjoyable experience at their wedding set for July 11, 2009.

I couple of days ago I was invited by a couple of good friends photographers (JT and Tony) to workshop in a very interesting location for an editorial assignment.

It was a nice opportunity to exercise our photographic muscles in a challenging place but the invaluable and an exceptional group of models everything work just great. We work for more than 14 hours, from sunrise to sunset and what you about to see is just a very brief sample of what I got.

Show it all, I think I would it need a whole new web site. ha, ha. I hope you enjoy these images.

At the last meeting at the OCC (Orlando Camera Club) more than a 100 photographers gathered to attend Arturo Macias -ArtzPhoto- workshop presentation titled "Portraiture, A Unique Point of View".

"I like to share my knowledge with my peers. I feel the responsibility of passing my knowledge as I before learned and keep learning from some of the best photographers in the world at every single convention I go.

It was a great crowd and we connected nicely so we had some fun moments as well as good exchange of information.

Engaged on time

Engagement sessions are the first step in give couples the sense of timing for their wedding photo session. They include planning for different location settings, getting used to the photographer's pace and variety of approaches and --the most important factor-- getting used to his suggestions, ideas and personality and conveying to him your personalities and plans.

Chenoa & Jonathan, featured in these images, understood that planning ahead and getting everything done in time is essential. Their wedding will be in November at Isleworth Country Club but they already did their engagement session early enough so we could have important items related to photography finished in a well set schedule.

Plan ahead and you will save a lot of stress for your days before your wedding.

Nothing is more gratifying that gaining the trust of my clients and finding recognition among my peers. Well, today I celebrate the honor that for me represent to be invited by one of the finest and greatest portraitist of our time, Tim Kelly, to cooperate with him in a project.

He asked me for help in translating some of his instructional videos for photographers title "Mastering the 4' x 6' softbox" and I felt a great label of privilege to work with an artist of his magnitude.

We had spent an intense day working at his recording studio in Lake Mary and we'll be finalizing the first step of this cooperation tomorrow.

I am sure that with the high label of reputation that backup Tim Kelly, it will be an instant success.

Last Tuesday, at the Orlando Camera Club meeting, Arturo Macias was honored with two Blue Ribbons Awards (Photojournalism & Portrait Categories) and two Yellow Ribbons Honor Prints (Photojournalism & Social Event Categories) at the the Florida Camera Club Council Tri-Annual Competition.

"To me this is one more step to reaffirm my goal of achieve the highest standards in the photographic industry as well as a photographic artist.

As the trust of my clients is the most important reward I could receive, I feel that it is my duty to introduce myself to them proving with my achievements the level of artistry and professional expertise I could offer to them"

The majority of my images are from my clients' events but once in a while I do also photograph models but in this case the opportunity when one step further when Romance Novel Cover super model Jimmy Thomas contact me asking if I was available to photograph him at the "Romance Novel Cover Writers Convention" at the Wyndham Hotel & Resort in a live show.

Beside that we end doing other sessions and the result of that is this two covers designed to be ready for publishing.

Workshop for Photographers.

I felt honored that PPA (The Professional Photographers of America) chosen me to be one of its instructors for its "Super Monday" workshop. The purpose of it is to spread the knowledge among other professionals to certain topics chosen by its instructor.

My presentation was titled:

"How to be Photographer of the Year".

I felt that after three consecutive years of been award in Central Florida Photographer of the Year, I was ready to share with other colleagues my experiences.

Initially I didn't know if the theme was going to be attractive to other peers but to my

surprise it was a total success. I limited to a total of ten attendance and all of them was filled out.

I was thrilled to find that photographers from every corner of the State was coming (from Tampa, Parrish, Holiday, Jacksonville, Vero Beach, Windermere, Lakeland, Jennings,

Bradenton and, hear this... from Valdosta,

Georgia). Wow!.

We spend more than 7 hours of intense disection of the topic. Analyzing the "12 elements of a Merit Image", from impact to creativity, from composition to style and so on until the main factor in an image: "the story telling".

All this rules were illustrated with samples of images I had entered on competition, showing it from the scratch image to the final print. So, no secret was hidden.

For the grand finale I choose to have a photo shoot with several models so they could apply some of the points we discussed.

Thanks Good, all of them reach save their homes so no secondary effects had been claim from my presentation.

I love to capture every single new opportunity to experiment with angles, perspectives and play with sense of space. On this particular venue the singular carpet's patterns ad an little more spice to the possibilities.

The image below was capture from the 8th floor of the hotel's balcony and I enjoy the elements of symmetry of the different objects on the composition.

The ceremony was hold at the Gallery at Avalon Island (Down Town Orlando) with the magic ingredient of been surrounded by paintings and art work from both artist.

They are running an exhibition there for the whole month of December (2008) call "Return to Forever". A collection that will take you breath away.

We couldn't end in a better way such a magic day. Edson & Kathleen reserved a surprise for Edson's parents by given them a ride around Down Town Orlando in a luxury Rolls-Royce collector's edition.

Photograph children is a challange. I always tell their parents, "do not expect that your child is going to do what you want, when you want it". Let them play "their magic". Yes, you have to be fast, you have to be patient and ready for "the moment", because when it comes they won't reply it.

Here you have a sample, "Isabella". What a rush!. She was all energy. jumping, running and doing anything but what everyone tell her to do. Well, I am sure that by looking at this angelical face you could imagen.

To keep her in one place for a few seconds, we try giving her a variety of things; one of them was a bunch of lipsticks. Yes, we did that.

What still wonder me is how a 14 month old child figure it out how to open and how to use it.

Don't tell me, it is in a woman' genes.

I love working with strong contrast, vivid color and fun couples. She (Barrie) is always playing, always a surprise and he (David) is all the time looking to Barrie in such a way the he cannot denied that he is totally in love. What ever she said or do, he always ready to follow just to make her happy.

Oh, I forgot. I love Barrie's red shoe. Did I said I like striking colors?

Artz Photo Places At Central Florida Photography Competition!

2008 had been an incredible year for me and ArtzPhoto but I realized that I have to start this blog somewhere or I will never start so, please, allow me to tell you this exacting experience as we go into the journey.

I have to start at one point so let me do it with a great news. A couple of weeks ago PPSCF (Professional Photographers Society of Central Florida) celebrated its quarterly event of "Print Education Competition". This is an opportunity to challenge myself against the best photographers in the industry in Central Florida.

This image of this good looking couple (Charissa & Kenneth) captured on the Ballroom of Church St at Down Town Orlando was award as First Place at the Social Event Category.

The image below was honored with Second Place in the same category. It was shot at a Sikh (Indian) wedding. (Sharon & Serge's wedding). I will post more about this wedding in the future because I enjoy a lot photographing them. Their album was great so stay tune to this blog and you'll see.

The following are the two major challenges. One is an architectural photograph (this is the first time I competed in this category) and the second photo was in illustrative category (I was not sure if the judges would it like as I title "Braking the rules). Well, I could not complain. Both of them got Merit Awards.

The First Stone of ArtzPhoto's Blog

This is the first stone to build ArtzPhoto's blog. I felt that what could be better that started with an image of my wife and I. Sara is the foundation of what I do. She helps me a lot and fights with me even more but what can you expect when you put together a Sagittarius and an Aries together...Pure fire!
